What is MooseFS?

MooseFS is a distributed storage system for fault tolerance, high availability, and scalability. Although it was initially just a POSIX-compliant file system, it now offers more ways to operate data, including block devices and dedicated APIs. Since 2005, MooseFS has provided a state-of-the-art solution for demanding users and 24/7 worldwide support. It is a reliable storage platform designed for mission-critical applications requiring stability, high availability, data tiering, load balancing, and more. It enables organizations to store and manage large amounts of data across multiple machines and hard disk drives while ensuring redundancy and reliability. Thanks to parallel data distribution, auto-healing, including automatic disk recovery, is automatic and seamless.

Key features include:

  • Fault Tolerance – Data is replicated across multiple nodes, preventing loss due to hardware failures.
  • High Availability – Ensures continuous access to data even if some nodes fail.
  • Scalability – Easily expand storage by adding new servers without downtime.
  • Self-Healing – Automatically detects and repairs corrupted or missing data without human intervention.
  • POSIX Compatibility – Supports standard file system operations, making integration seamless.

MooseFS is ideal for environments requiring distributed storage solutions, such as big data processing, cloud storage, and high-performance computing. It provides a cost-effective way to manage large-scale storage. Storage can be built using commodity x86-64 or ARM platform components from nearly all hardware manufacturers. It is available as an Open-Source or Pro version, along with manufacturer support for both.
